Post-spawning defence by male brook charr is linked to perceived paternity

چکیده

Abstract Salmonine fishes are generally thought not to exhibit male parental care, although brief post-spawning mate-guarding by males is known for a number of species, often populations where eggs subjected intense predation (egg cannibalism). Here, detailed in situ data on the spawning behaviour brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis , from naturally reproducing lake population used test whether mate guarding (i.e. paternal care) related perceived paternity. From video records events ( n = 20), we documented novel whereby dominant curtails ahead female (by ~ 3 s) and immediately inspects nest. Afterwards, significantly reduces courtship (quivers) but aggressively defends with same intensity as prior spawning. The duration (range: 3–48 min), however, declined increasing numbers peripheral that had rushed into nest at Neither active females present grounds nor body size influenced amount time spent guarding. Extensive revisitation (80% visits) sites during focal sampling bouts highlights importance male’s ability predict readiness spawn significant component reproductive success. Thus, appear guard cost acquiring other mating opportunities adjust depending upon their

Paternity in horseshoe crabs when spawning in multiple-male groups.

Unpaired or satellite male horseshoe crabs, Limulus polyphemus, are attracted to and often form a group around a pair (a female with an attached male) that is nesting in the high intertidal zone. These males are engaged in sperm competition. We observed nesting pairs and their associated satellites in the wild, collected and reared their eggs and used genetic markers to examine paternity. We fo...

Coding Gene SNP Mapping Reveals QTL Linked to Growth and Stress Response in Brook Charr (Salvelinus fontinalis)

Growth performance and reduced stress response are traits of major interest in fish production. Growth and stress-related quantitative trait loci (QTL) have been already identified in several salmonid species, but little effort has been devoted to charrs (genus Salvelinus). Moreover, most QTL studies to date focused on one or very few traits, and little investigation has been devoted to QTL ide...

Behavioural Thermoregulatory Tactics in Lacustrine Brook Charr, Salvelinus fontinalis

The need to vary body temperature to optimize physiological processes can lead to thermoregulatory behaviours, particularly in ectotherms. Despite some evidence of within-population phenotypic variation in thermal behaviour, the occurrence of alternative tactics of this behaviour is rarely explicitly considered when studying natural populations. The main objective of this study was to determine...

Adaptive migratory divergence among sympatric brook charr populations.

Ecological processes clearly contribute to population divergence, yet how they interact over complex life cycles remains poorly understood. Notably, the evolutionary consequences of migration between breeding and non-breeding areas have received limited attention. We provide evidence for a negative association between interpopulation differences in migration (between breeding and feeding areas,...

Larval paternity and male reproductive success of a broadcast-spawning gorgonian, Plexaura kuna

Male reproductive success of the broadcastspawning gorgonian, Plexaura kuna Lasker, Kim and Co€roth, 1996, was measured in June 1994 and June and July 1995 at two sites in the San Blas Islands, Panama in order to determine the environmental and biotic factors a€ecting individual reproductive success. Developing embryos were collected in the ®eld during natural spawning events, and paternity de...
